Hurricane Harvey & Helping Your Child Cope With Natural Disasters

On August 25th, Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the Texas coast, bringing powerful winds and heavy rainfall with it. After days of non-stop rain, Houston and many other regions were left in shambles, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to walk away from what was once their home. While this devastation undoubtedly affects many people’s jobs, daily routines, and mental health, it is important to remember that children are affected as well.

It can be difficult for young children to grasp natural disasters and why and how they occur. Children cope with events such as this differently depending on their age, but they are all susceptible to its negative impact. Whether your child was directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey or not, these tips for coping with natural disasters are sure to help your family move forward no matter what you face in the future.

    Talk About It

One of the best ways to help your child process what has happened is by discussing the events that have occurred. Explain the disaster in logical terms so your child can fully understand why or how things have changed. Most importantly, allow your child to express his or her emotions about what has taken place, and listen to their worries or fears. By creating a safe space for your child to share their feelings, they will be less likely to bottle up or hold onto any negative emotions. A wonderful resource on how to discuss natural disasters with children can be found in this Sesame Street episode, where Big Bird’s friends help him rebuild his nest after a storm.

    Maintain A Routine

Your child can hold onto a sense of normalcy by maintaining their typical routine in whatever way possible. Try to stick with their normal bed/wake up time in order to ensure they’re getting enough sleep. Allow them time to learn and play, and stick with any rules you would enforce on a daily basis. Many parents feel the need to coddle children in the midst of a disaster, but sticking to a routine can provide a sense of safety and security.

    Be Patient

Remember – each child processes natural disasters differently. While one child may appear totally unaffected, another could display symptoms of anxiety or even depression. Be patient as your little one copes with how their life has changed, and know that it could take weeks, months, or even years for them to fully recover. Love, comfort, and patience go a long way when helping your child move past a difficult time.

It is our hope to raise $100,000 or more for all staff members and teachers whose homes, families, and livelihood have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Speech and language development are two of the most important aspects of learning during infancy and toddlerhood. The first three years of your child’s life mark the most vital period in terms of obtaining speech and language skills. In this blog we will take a closer look at speech and language development in infants and child care students.

The difference between speech and language:

We first need to take a closer look at the differences between speech and language. Speech refers to your child’s ability to make sounds which eventually become words, the act of talking.

Language refers to our ability to use speech in order to communicate with others. This includes making use of words and gestures to get our point across as well as clearly understanding the things other people are saying to us.

When can I expect my child to grasp speech and language?

This development differs from child to child. This section will serve as a rough overview as to when you can expect certain milestones. Your child should begin to babble by the time he or she reaches the age of six months. Babbling is comprised of your child making silly noises or speaking in gibberish. By the time your child reaches the age of 18 months, you will find that your child’s language and speech development will quickly accelerate. By the age of two-years-old, your toddler should be using 40 to 60 words while also stringing short, two-word sentences and phrases together.

  • Hixson Child Care: How infant-directed speech helps your child learn to talk

    hixson_tn_child_care

Child care experts around the world have been looking at the ways in which infant-directed speech (IDS) can help your infant grasp language, and eventually learn how to speak. It goes far beyond just making babbling noises at your child. This piece will take a closer look at how infant-directed speech can help your child learn how to talk.

    What is infant-directed speech?

Infant-directed speech is a way in which adults speak to infants, who have not yet learned how to speak yet. It is characterized by a cooing pattern of inflection that differs quite significantly from regular adult speech. It also features hyper articulation of certain words, while vowel sounds are often drawn out. The type of speech also incorporates a shortening of much more complicated words.

How does infant-directed speech help your child learn to talk?

Studies have shown that infant-directed speech is a much more effective way of talking to babies, when trying to get their attention. Infant care specialists across the world have noted the success of this technique, in a number of different languages. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to hold your child’s attention for a much longer period of time, as well as drawing out words, that may otherwise be too complicated to grasp, for such a young brain.

In addition to these benefits, infant-directed speech also facilitates important bonding time between parents and infants. It is this type of loving and nurturing activity that helps to encourage healthy brain development in your child.

    hixson_tn_daycare

A child will encounter many subjects and an abundance of information during the next twelve years of school, and possibly beyond for college. Considering this mountain of upcoming learning and multitude of subjects, reading is potentially the most important of them all. While some preschoolers will enjoy learning to read and continue to find reading to be their favorite subject, others classmates might not share this enthusiasm. For those parents who have one of those less than enthusiastic readers, here a few ideas of how to get your preschooler to enjoy reading using a few games to increase interest:

    Act it out

One way to get your child excited about reading is to channel your inner drama skills and act out everything that occurs on a page of the book you are sharing with your child. This activity is designed for your preschooler to have fun, while also learning to read. Remember, you as the parent can influence your child by the level of enthusiasm you exhibit concerning many topics, including reading. Chances are if you enjoy reading, or at least act as if you do, your child will follow your directive and become happier readers.

    Read with your child

Most adults remember childhood daily rituals with their parents including nighttime reading. Now as a parent yourself, creating memories with your own children by spending time is important, especially when they are learning to read. This bonding time enhances both their reading and verbalization skills when you and your child alternate reading out loud. Once you have established a bedtime reading routine, challenge your child to read out loud two pages for every one that you read. Slowly increase this process until your child is able to read an entire book without your assistance, which will give self-confidence to master any reading level both now and in the future.

    Create a rewards chart

Formulating a chart that records a child’s goals and developmental milestones can be displayed for easy access and as a daily prompt to write down these events. Note on the graph every book your child brings home from daycare and reads to you. Just the act of reading should merit a mark on the chart and recognition. A reward for the first five books your child accomplishes might be a trip for ice-cream, while the incentive for ten books could be a visit to a child-friendly museum or other activity . Get creative with the rewards, and your child will love the simplicity of enjoying something that the two of you can do together which also will have a life-long positive impact on his or her own childhood memories and potentially academic future.

Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Hixson, Tennessee takes great pride in the quality of preschool education offered by our friendly, loving, and professional staff. Introducing your child to a new language will help improve brain development. This will aid with brain structure as the child becomes an adult. By teaching your child a second language you stimulate neural growth and connections. As a result, and as your child get older, he or she may have the ability to learn more complex motor skills. Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Hixson runs a successful brain development program. It is intended to enhance and support neural pathways for language, social-emotional, cognitive and physical development. We have compiled useful information on the benefits of introducing your child to a new language below.

Benefits of learning a new language

The younger your child is, the easier it will be for him or her to learn a second, third and fourth language. As your child gets older it becomes more difficult. This may happen as early as nine months. Studies show that a brain of a child who is multilingual is:

    • Quicker
    • Nimbler
    • Is able to resolve conflicts
    • Deals better with ambiguities

This can be a huge advantage for your child as they go through day care, elementary school and beyond.

Other advantages for your child being multilingual or bilingual include:

    • Connecting to others
    • Great listening skills
    • Being able to learn new words easily

Your child will have greater neural activity in the dense tissue in the areas of the brain that deal with memory and attention.

Our brain development program in Hixson is designed to stimulate certain parts of your child’s brain, in order to maximize mental capacity. For more on our child care services in Hixson contact us, or pay us a visit and we will assist you with all your child care inquiries.

Many parents believe that breast-feeding an infant is vital in bonding with a child and that bottle-feeding is impersonal. Studies have shown, however, that a child who is bottle-feeding bonds just as much as a child who is breast-feeding. The key to bottle feeding is to do it correctly.

The most important thing is that the parent is assisting the child in achieving proper nourishment. To enhance this bonding time though, a parent who is bottle-feeding her infant can ensure that the child is feeding properly by engaging with the child, assisting him or her in clearing airways, and by providing a quiet place to enjoy a meal.

Here are a few tips for bottle-feeding that we teach to any parent with a child at Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Hixson, Tennessee. Infants need to burp a lot when feeding, which means it is important help them out every two ounces or so. Remember to:

    • Allow your child to stop crying before feeding them for a better reception.
    • Allow your child to eat in peace and enjoy your full attention, turning off the TV and your cell phone.
    • Let your child eat as much as he or she wants, but do not overfeed. Overfeeding can lead to weight issues as early as infancy, so manage their intake to be sure they are satiated but not overfed.

You can provide your child with our specialized child care services for an exceptional educational experience. Here, he or she can be taught all of the fundamentals that they will need to thrive in a safe, secure and nurturing environment. Because we are more than a typical day care center, we focus predominantly on your child’s brain development.

Enrolling a child in preschool is an important decision for parents. It is essential to talk to your child and evaluate whether he/she is ready. There is no right or wrong answer to this. At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Hixson we know how difficult this decision can be. We have compiled a list of questions you can ask yourself before enrolling your child at a daycare center.

Think about your motivation for taking your child to preschool

Some parents are full time stay at home parents, and some have demanding full time jobs. If you feel the need to offer your child a better opportunity at learning, this might assist you in your decision. If you are a stay at home mom, and need an occasional break, or choose to allow your child a chance for independence, this might be your reason. Only you know what is best for your child.

How does your child interact with others

Observing your child as he/she interacts with other children can aid you in deciding for or against preschool. When a child gets along well with other children, and makes friends easily, then he/she will most likely adapt well to preschool. If your child is shy or withdrawn, your decision might be more difficult. Preschool can work wonders in dealing with shyness. Parents should evaluate this carefully. They must consider what will best meet their needs, and that of their child.

    Attachment to parents

When a child is extremely attached to their parents, and cries when you have to leave them, preschool might be the perfect choice to teach them to be independent. At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Hixson, we teach our children independence and how to cope in a wide variety of situations.

    • Bugs and Slugs: Most insects are beneficial to nature and play a key role, from pollinating flowers to cleaning the environment. They also serve as feed for birds and other creatures. Our Bugs and Slugs section teaches children about other fascinating insects including butterflies, grasshoppers, and crickets!
    • Wild About Wildlife: This program will introduce children to the wonders of many species while also imitating their behavior! Campers will learn why rabbits hop, how snakes slither, and much more.
    • Off the Beaten Path: Our program is the perfect combination of traditional camp activities, and introduces them to the wilderness, all within the comfort and safety of our classrooms.
